About Course

The Relationship Literacy Program for America’s Police is a national online training pathway designed for police officers, supervisors, civilian staff, and families. Built from Brian C. Alston’s four RLP modules, the course adapts relationship literacy to the daily pressures of policing: street encounters, squad-room culture, leadership, family strain, trauma exposure, wellness, and community trust.

The training is designed to be online, modular, scenario-based, mobile-friendly, and culturally aligned with the realities of more than 17,000 law-enforcement agencies. Officers can complete the core training and pre/post assessments for free. Agency analytics, dashboards, evaluation support, and reporting can be offered as a separate paid service.

Participants will strengthen self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making so they can regulate stress, communicate clearly, reduce unnecessary conflict, support healthier departmental cultures, and serve communities with authority, safety, and humanity.

Course Content

Pre-Assessment and Orientation
<p>Learners begin with the purpose of RLP for policing, the free-training model, the role of analytics, and the core outcomes expected from the program.</p>

Module 1: Self-Awareness
<p>Knowing your internal landscape before you act. Officers examine stress physiology, identity, emotional literacy, trauma load, micro-regulation, and long-term wellness.</p>

Module 2: Social Awareness
<p>Reading people, environments, and culture accurately. Officers learn to interpret stress responses, cultural context, trauma indicators, internal department dynamics, and family cues.</p>

Module 3: Relationship Skills
<p>Building healthy interactions in high-stress environments. Officers practice tactical empathy, de-escalation, partner communication, supervisor feedback, and family relationship skills.</p>

Module 4: Responsible Decision-Making
<p>Choosing actions that align with ethics, safety, and humanity. Officers examine cognitive load, ethical frameworks, use-of-force relational impact, off-duty conduct, and personal accountability.</p>

Extension Tracks
<p>Additional tracks adapt the same RLP skills for supervisors, families, peer support teams, wellness teams, and community engagement.</p>

Agency Rollout and Analytics
<p>Departments learn how to roll out RLP, integrate it with POST and continuing education, evaluate outcomes, fund the program, and use analytics responsibly.</p>
